#Spotlight Thursday: The Private Sector – Leigh M. Lane

ps-cover1

About the Book

The world of corporate greed runs rampant after the government’s dissolution has left police, fire, and all other services once handled by the public sector in the hands of privatized businesses and wealthy investors.

With the class divide ever widening, debtor prisons for the lower and middle classes overflowing, disease ravaging the country, and resources running dry, the streets have become a battleground for those who would fight against the elite’s corrupt system, against a world spiraling into ruin, against the devastating impact of a society ruled by the Private Sector.

“In the tradition of 1984, Leigh M. Lane delivers a terrifying vision of the future—a horrific future that may not be so distant after all….”—Lisa Mannetti, Stoker Award-winning author of The Gentling Box and Deathwatch

Outside Review

The Private Sector (World-Mart) is a really interesting tale because of the realism that Leigh M. Lane is able to bring[…]. Sometimes dystopian stories can be hard to follow, but Lane’s description of this greedy and money hungry world is something that I could immediately see. I think a lot of readers will be able to relate to these problems and will suffer with the characters, knowing it’s possible that these things could actually happen. I really enjoyed this premise and thought Lane executed it beautifully. It was a very thought provoking story. 5 stars” –Taylor Wade, Readers’ Favorite

Interview – S.M. Freedman

fiw-smfAward-winning author S.M. Freedman announces the release of her apocalyptic science-fiction novel, Impact Winter (ISBN 978-0-9975427-0-7), the sequel to Freedman’s debut mystery, The Faithful (ISBN 978-1503948044), which is published under Amazon’s mystery/thriller imprint, Thomas & Mercer. An international Amazon bestseller, The Faithful was a Quarter Finalist in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and was chosen by Suspense Magazine as one of the Best Books of 2015 in the Debut Author category

Author of The Faithful and Impact Winter, S.M. Freedom answered a few questions about her novels.

Interview

Q: Both The Faithful and its new sequel, Impact Winter, are books in a science fiction series about a group of psychic children abducted by a tribe of priests who conspire to use them as weapons against humanity. What inspired you to write a series that explores the themes of kidnapping, mind control, and psychic power?

SMFreedman: “I’m only just beginning to realize how much I write what I fear: Losing a child, things that go bump in the night, the ‘end of days.’ Eventually, I grabbed a bunch of those fears and forced them to join together by asking my favorite question, what if? That’s how I Fidele was born, an international organization run by a group of ‘priests’ who believe they have evolved into a superior breed of human, and that in order for them to thrive, the rest of humanity needs to be destroyed.”

Q: Like The Faithful, Impact Winter features former missing child, Ryanne Jervis, who has been living as meteorite hunter, Rowan Wilson, before FBI agent Josh Metcalf locates her. What’s special about Ryanne and how did you come to choose her as the star of your sci-fi series?SMFreedman

SMF: “In February of 2013 a meteorite exploded above Russia, and it caught my imagination. I started digging and became fascinated with the profession of meteorite hunting. I thought it was the coolest of the cool that people actually work as space data analysts, searching the night sky for threats to life on Earth, and decided I needed to write about it. Hours and hours of research later, Ryanne came to life. She’s sassy, addicted to junk food, haunted by a past she can’t remember, and in denial about certain ‘abilities’ that make her unusual. As a meteorite hunter, Ryanne works at the Spaceguard facility on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. And yes, it’s a real place and a real job, but if you try to sneak a peek you’ll find yourself facing some big guns. Trust me on that one!”

Q: There are strong elements of feminism and motherhood, especially with regard to Ryanne and her mother, Sherry, and Neema and her abducted daughter, Leora, in both of your novels. What made you decide to pursue these thematic issues in the series and, especially, Impact Winter?

SMF: “It actually came as a bit of a surprise to me! It wasn’t my intention to delve so deeply into the bond between parent and child, but as a mother of two that topic is obviously close to my heart. In Impact Winter, several characters are trying to repair broken parent-child bonds after a lengthy absence, whether the absence is due to kidnapping, isolation, or alcohol abuse. The uncertainty, yearning, and heartache of parenthood became the backdrop for everything else.”

Q: Impact Winter has a much darker feel to it than The Faithful. What makes it so different from the first book and in what ways will readers see the returning characters develop and grow?

SMF: “Impact Winter is definitely the dark middle child of the series. Ryanne is haunted by visions of the second phase in I Fidele’s new world order: the round-up and brutal internment of all survivors. And while most of the main characters return, not all of them will survive. I’ve also added one new character, Neema. In The Faithful, Ryanne was run over trying to stop the abduction of Neema’s daughter, and then inadvertently responsible for the murder of Neema’s mother. But Neema remained nameless, hovering in the background. I kept thinking about her. This poor woman was trying to deal with her daughter’s disappearance and her mother’s death, and then she was thrust into global chaos. How would she survive? How would she keep her two remaining children alive? She became a key player in Impact Winter’s storyline. Through Neema’s eyes, we see the aftermath of I Fidele’s destruction. We see the great warrior mama unleashed as she fights to survive and find her lost daughter—and through her, we witness the next step in I Fidele’s plan for world domination.”

Q: What would you like readers to remember most about your books?

SMF: “That they are great stories, hopefully! If my words take readers out of their own lives for awhile and touch them in some small way, then I’m happy.”

Q: Are you working on the sequel to Impact Winter and, if so, what can you tell us about it?

SMF: “Definitely! I took a little break to work on a detective mystery, but Ryanne has been demanding my attention. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that I Fidele is far from finished. We’ll also see a lot more of young Jack, as he grows into his role as the protector of the White.”

The Reaper Rises (Aerenden #4):
In the months following Meaghan’s reported death, her kingdom has chosen to reestablish villages, hiding behind the protection spells Garon continues to breach. Nick barely holds the Æerenden people together as he prepares them for the final battle.

Meanwhile, the Shadow Guard still thrives. Their spies have infiltrated every part of the kingdom, working to eliminate the royal family and a power they believe will destroy everything good.

Hope and trust have given way to fear and despair. Death seems imminent. And a senseless voice from the past offers the only clue for survival. Keep a fire burning…

About the previous books:

The Child Returns (Aerenden #1):
After witnessing her parents’ brutal murders at the hands of red-eyed creatures, Meaghan narrowly escapes the same fate. Her best friend, Nick, tells her the creatures are Mardróch. They come from another world and so does she. Now that the Mardróch have found her, she must return to her homeland of Ærenden or face death.

Left with little choice, she follows Nick into a strange world both similar to Earth and drastically different. Vines have the ability to attack. Monkeys freeze their victims with a glare. Men create bombs from thin air. Even Meaghan’s newly discovered empath power turns into a danger she can’t control.

But control becomes the least of her worries once the Mardróch begin targeting her. When Nick confesses he knows the reason they want her, she learns the truth behind the kingdom’s fifteen-year civil war–a long-buried secret that could cost Meaghan her life.

The Gildonae Alliance (Aerenden #2):
Several months after Meaghan’s return to Ærenden, the kingdom’s war has taken a turn for the worse. The Mardróch army hunts the new King and Queen, destroying villages in its wake. And Meaghan and Nick, training for battle in their remote section of wilderness, are far from safe. Danger hides in shadows and behind innocent faces. Allies become foes. Each day is a fight to survive. But in the end, only one threat matters. And it’s a threat they never see coming.

The Zeiihbu Master (Aerenden #3):
Separated and on opposite sides of the kingdom, Nick and Meaghan face different pursuits which could change the balance of power in Ærenden forever.

While Nick trains the villagers to be soldiers, Meaghan and a small rescue party venture into Zeiihbu to find Faillen’s young son, before Garon can use the boy’s power to destroy those still fighting against his rule.

Everyone knows Meaghan could be on a suicide mission, but when Nick stumbles upon a secret concealed in one of the southern villages, he realizes that Garon might not be Meaghan’s greatest foe. The enemy most likely to kill her is someone who has also promised to keep her safe.

Vertical Lines – Release Event

Welcome to the release event for Vertical Lines by Kristen Kehoe! Vertical Lines is a new adult contemporary and is now available for sale on Amazon.

About the Book:

An artist and a smart girl.

A staid family and a broken one.

She’s adorably literal; he’s big and quietly emotional.

Jordana Richards was determined to make the best of her post high school life, despite the fact that nothing about her current college experience was of her choosing: not the school or the major, and definitely not the place. But it wasn’t home, so that’s something. Yet, the harder she tried to fit in, the less she felt like she did.

Until the night she said screw it.

Until the night she walked out on her parents and bought her very own piece of cake.

The same night she met Brooklyn Novak: brooding artist, huge man, overall scary human being who took a keen interest in her.

Brooklyn was out of ideas. He had no art, because really, his subjects had no soul. When the girl at the convenience store clicked her way into his life on five hundred dollar shoes and the fumes of a tantrum, this changed. Jordana Richards: the rich girl with a mission who gave Brooklyn the spark he needed to create again.

Uncomfortable with their attraction, Brooks and Jordan strike a deal: he’ll help her have fun, she’ll be his muse for as long as he needs. Simple.

Yeah right.

The more time they spend together, the more both of them realize that what started out as a convenient relationship is now transitioning to vital, and neither knows how to deal with it.

When a truth comes to light that has the potential to break both of their worlds, Jordan and Brooks have to decide how deep their feelings really go, and just how much they are willing to sacrifice in order to be together.

Welcome to the blitz tour for What If by Rita Szollos! This romantic comedy is free for for Kindle October 5-9 only! We also have two great giveaways for you at the end of this post!

About the Book:

cover_paperbackWhat If is a romantic comedy and adventure about a black and white photograph.

Ailie Faulkner, a single, 39 year-old woman, married to her work, treasures a black and white photograph, and she’s stored it in her closet for more than a decade. Like a wistful teenager staring adoringly at a poster above her bed, Ailie has spent years returning to this photo again and again, concocting fantasies and daydreams about the photo’s handsome content.

Prone to list making and overall levelheadedness, Ailie usually isn’t one to believe in fate, but her curiosity (ahem, obsession!) with the photograph leads her to a life-changing decision and sends her on an adventure filled with humor, travel, bouts of nausea, unexpected discoveries, and reflections on cooking. Encouraged by her overbearing but obliging mother and an inquisitive grandmother, and guided by the insightful (albeit often contradictory) advice of her best friends, Ailie endeavors to learn about the photo, the person within its frame, and the possibilities of their future.

Teresa of the New World – Teaser Tour

Welcome to the teaser tour for Teresa of the New World by Sharman Apt Russell!  Teresa of the New World is a young adult/new adult historical fiction with fantasy elements and is available for sale through most book stores.

About the Book:

From the bestselling author of An Obsession with Butterflies comes a magical story of America in the time of the conquistadors.

In 1528, the real-life conquistador Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked in the New World where he lived as a slave, trader, and shaman. In this lyrical weaving of history and myth, the adventurer takes his young daughter Teresa from her home in Texas to travel to outposts in New Spain. Once there, Teresa is left behind as a servant in a Spanish household. But when an epidemic of measles devastates the area, the teenager must set off on a new journey, listening again to the voices of the desert, befriending a war-horse and were-jaguar, sinking into the earth to swim through fossil and stone, reclaiming her power to outwit the cunning figure of Plague.

A story of apocalypse and hope, Teresa of the New World takes you into the dreamscape of the sixteenth-century American Southwest.

GUEST POST

It took me twenty years to write Teresa of the New World, a reflection of my long time obsession with the Spanish conquistador Álvar NúñezCabeza de Vaca, with the numinous deserts of the American Southwest, with the dreamscape of the sixteenth century, with the deadly diseases unwittingly brought by the Europeans at the time of First Contact, with the complexities of the hero father, with deep earth magic, with were-jaguars, with all that and more.

Supposedly this is the story of Teresa, daughter of a Capoque mother and a Spanish adventurer. But really I think it has become my autobiography.

In 1528, the real-life conquistador Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked in the New World where he lived for eight years as a slave, trader, and shaman. Later, he wrote about those years in a report to the king of Spain, and that account—rich with details about the tribes of Texas and how they lived–has always fascinated me. In my retelling, the Spaniard takes his young daughter Teresa from her home to walk with him toward the setting sun, west to the outposts of New Spain, their travels accompanied by miracles–visions and prophecies.

But when Teresa reaches the outposts of New Spain, life is not what her father had promised. As a kitchen servant in the household of a Spanish official, she grows up estranged from the magic she knew as a child, when she could speak to the earth and listen to animals. When a new epidemic of measles devastates the area, the sixteen-year-old sets off on her own journey, befriending a Mayan were-jaguar who cannot control his shape-shifting and a warhorse abandoned by his Spanish owner. Now Teresa moves through a land stalked by Plague: smallpox as well as measles, typhus, and scarlet fever.

Teresa lived in a time of apocalypse and hope, of magic and change—and I think we live in a similar time. She had to let go of fear. She had to let go of anger. Living in her world was a wonderful and profound experience for me.

I would love to hear your reactions or thoughts to any aspect of Teresa of the New World. And I would be pleased to post your comments, stories, and drawings on my website. Just contact me at www.sharmanaptrussell.com.
