What If – Rita Szollos – Blitz Tour

Welcome to the blitz tour for What If by Rita Szollos! This romantic comedy is free for for Kindle October 5-9 only! We also have two great giveaways for you at the end of this post!

About the Book:

cover_paperbackWhat If is a romantic comedy and adventure about a black and white photograph.

Ailie Faulkner, a single, 39 year-old woman, married to her work, treasures a black and white photograph, and she’s stored it in her closet for more than a decade. Like a wistful teenager staring adoringly at a poster above her bed, Ailie has spent years returning to this photo again and again, concocting fantasies and daydreams about the photo’s handsome content.

Prone to list making and overall levelheadedness, Ailie usually isn’t one to believe in fate, but her curiosity (ahem, obsession!) with the photograph leads her to a life-changing decision and sends her on an adventure filled with humor, travel, bouts of nausea, unexpected discoveries, and reflections on cooking. Encouraged by her overbearing but obliging mother and an inquisitive grandmother, and guided by the insightful (albeit often contradictory) advice of her best friends, Ailie endeavors to learn about the photo, the person within its frame, and the possibilities of their future.

Add it to your Goodreads shelf &
it’s FREE for Kindle, Oct 5-9 only!

Teresa of the New World – Teaser Tour

Welcome to the teaser tour for Teresa of the New World by Sharman Apt Russell!  Teresa of the New World is a young adult/new adult historical fiction with fantasy elements and is available for sale through most book stores.

About the Book:

From the bestselling author of An Obsession with Butterflies comes a magical story of America in the time of the conquistadors.

In 1528, the real-life conquistador Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked in the New World where he lived as a slave, trader, and shaman. In this lyrical weaving of history and myth, the adventurer takes his young daughter Teresa from her home in Texas to travel to outposts in New Spain. Once there, Teresa is left behind as a servant in a Spanish household. But when an epidemic of measles devastates the area, the teenager must set off on a new journey, listening again to the voices of the desert, befriending a war-horse and were-jaguar, sinking into the earth to swim through fossil and stone, reclaiming her power to outwit the cunning figure of Plague.

A story of apocalypse and hope, Teresa of the New World takes you into the dreamscape of the sixteenth-century American Southwest.

GUEST POST

It took me twenty years to write Teresa of the New World, a reflection of my long time obsession with the Spanish conquistador Álvar NúñezCabeza de Vaca, with the numinous deserts of the American Southwest, with the dreamscape of the sixteenth century, with the deadly diseases unwittingly brought by the Europeans at the time of First Contact, with the complexities of the hero father, with deep earth magic, with were-jaguars, with all that and more.

Supposedly this is the story of Teresa, daughter of a Capoque mother and a Spanish adventurer. But really I think it has become my autobiography.

In 1528, the real-life conquistador Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked in the New World where he lived for eight years as a slave, trader, and shaman. Later, he wrote about those years in a report to the king of Spain, and that account—rich with details about the tribes of Texas and how they lived–has always fascinated me. In my retelling, the Spaniard takes his young daughter Teresa from her home to walk with him toward the setting sun, west to the outposts of New Spain, their travels accompanied by miracles–visions and prophecies.

But when Teresa reaches the outposts of New Spain, life is not what her father had promised. As a kitchen servant in the household of a Spanish official, she grows up estranged from the magic she knew as a child, when she could speak to the earth and listen to animals. When a new epidemic of measles devastates the area, the sixteen-year-old sets off on her own journey, befriending a Mayan were-jaguar who cannot control his shape-shifting and a warhorse abandoned by his Spanish owner. Now Teresa moves through a land stalked by Plague: smallpox as well as measles, typhus, and scarlet fever.

Teresa lived in a time of apocalypse and hope, of magic and change—and I think we live in a similar time. She had to let go of fear. She had to let go of anger. Living in her world was a wonderful and profound experience for me.

I would love to hear your reactions or thoughts to any aspect of Teresa of the New World. And I would be pleased to post your comments, stories, and drawings on my website. Just contact me at www.sharmanaptrussell.com.

Finally, she has been offered the chance to work for her own people, who must evacuate their beloved Earth Shaman from the slopes of an active volcano. No other engineer in history could build the craft that Kasha has designed for this task: the sky chariot.

However, in order to fly it, she and her cousin, Ahote, will breach the most sacred rules of the Andalanos, the pale skinned race of people who govern their nation. Once, Kasha thought she would not mind betraying them. They had only given her grief.

But as she has grown in her talent for engineering, many Andalanos have supported her at great risk to themselves. Even high ranking government officials seek her counsel and beg for her aid in a costly war they fight on the coast, in a part of the kingdom Kasha has never seen and never thought she’d care about.

You Can’t Get Blood Out of Shag Carpet by Juliette Harper

Welcome to the blog tour of You Can’t Get Blood Out of Shag Carpet by Juliette Harper! This is the first book in A Study Club Mystery series and it’s now available for sale on Amazon and Smashwords for only .99 cents!

This tour runs June 15-26 with reviews, interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.

Guest Post:

It’s always fun to get a chance to write a guest post, so many thanks to Writerbee for giving me the space today to talk about You Can’t Get Blood Out of Shag Carpet, the debut novel in my new cozy “Study Club” mystery series.

The idea for this book really came out of the closing chapters of the third book of The Lockwood Legacy, Alice’s Portrait. The four old women who dominate the end of that story are the major characters in Shag Carpet, but with the clock turned back to 1968.

Clara Wyler, Mae Ella Gormley, Sugar Watson, and Wilma Schneider are the officers and leading members of “the” local Study Club. They band together when one of their own, Wanda Jean Milton, is accused of murdering her husband with an Old Hickory carving knife. Local law enforcement is not stepping up to find the real killer, and the women have no idea how much local dirt they’re about to uncover.

The time period and small town setting gave me the canvas to play with big bouffants and feminism Texas style. I was even able to throw in a signature orange lava lamp at Sugar’s Style and Spray, the town’s leading beauty parlor and ground zero for much of the sleuthing action.

It would be almost impossible to describe how much fun it was to write this book, an energy I hope is evident on the page. As some of you may know, I’m actually two people, the combination of a creative team that both remember the 1960s. They spent a lot of their “work” time on this manuscript giggling over old TV commercials on YouTube and looking at the era’s fashions with the attitude of, “what were we thinking?”

As a result, this book is full of a lot of loving nostalgia tinged with good-natured irreverence and coated with Aqua Net hairspray. There just happens to be a tidy little murder right in the middle of it all, complete with a ruined shag carpet. The only thing that’s missing is a Tupperware party!

One of my favorite reviews of this book to date began like this, “No one is quite sure what the ladies in the Study Club study, but I’ll tell you one thing: I sure want to be a member of the club.” All I can say to that is, “Me too!”

Part of the fun of being a writer is that for me, and for the ladies of the Study Club, the 1960s never have to end. I assure you, the little town in this book is about to enjoy a crime wave courtesy of my pen.

The next book is already in the works. I hope you have fun meeting the Study Club women, and that you’ll look forward to joining them for their next mystery in You Can’t Put a Corpse in a Parade.

About the Book:

Wanda Jean Milton discovers her husband, local exterminator Hilton Milton, dead on her new shag carpet with an Old Hickory carving knife sticking out of his chest. Beside herself over how she’ll remove the stain, and grief-stricken over Hilton’s demise, Wanda Jean finds herself the prime suspect in the case. But she is also a member of “the” local Study Club, a bastion of independent Texas feminism 1960s style. Club President Clara Wyler has no intention of allowing a member to be a murder suspect during her administration. Aided by her younger sister and County Clerk, Mae Ella Gormley; Sugar Watson, the proprietress of Sugar’s Style and Spray; and Wilma Schneider, Army MASH veteran and local RN, the Club women set out to clear Wanda Jean’s name — never guessing the local dirt they’ll uncover in the process.

Welcome to my tour stop for Just Pru by Anne Pfeffer. This is a review tour and runs February 16-27th.  Just Pru releases March 2, 2015. Check out the tour page for more information.

About the Book:

JustPru_Lo res_11.20When twenty-five-year-old Pru Anderson—braless, pajama-clad, and clutching her cat, Chuck—is rescued from her burning Los Angeles apartment, the thing that scares her most is meeting the neighbors. New people make her hide in the bathroom, counting by sevens, but when her home is destroyed, she must turn strangers into friends …  or crawl back to the controlling parents she only recently escaped.

What would her idol, Pepper Hathaway, do? That’s a no brainer: the detective-slash-supermodel heroine from Pru’s favorite TV series would take no prisoners while looking fierce in a tankini and stilettos. So when the chance comes up to live with playwright Ellen, Pru sets aside her fears and goes for it.

Thus begin the adventures of a girl who’s never had a job, a friend, or a first kiss. Swept into Ellen’s whirlwind life, Pru begins to build her own, as director’s assistant for a new play, muse to brooding actor Blake, and possible love interest to adorably neurotic neighbor, Adam.

Only one thing can derail Pru’s exhilarating journey. Well, actually, it’s two things—and they’re in a car headed straight for LA to torpedo her life. When the past that nearly destroyed her comes calling, who will she be: a Prudence or a Pepper?

Writerbee’s Review of Just Pru

5 Stars!

This book made me laugh and made me shudder. Looking into the mind of a person suffering from anxiety and depression can be humorous and frightening. Pru is a size 16 gal with severe anxiety issues who is trying to change her life – she doesn’t want to go on living with her parents forever. She wants to get out and do things on her own, but everything her parents have ever told her is holding her back. A series of unfortunate events propels her to make many of those changes happen, and shows her that she isn’t as crazy as some other people – especially actors.

There are many great devices used in this book to propel the story, such as Pru’s love of television and the “life lessons” she remembers from different episodes of sit-coms, dramas, and made-for-TV movies. The journal entries add a touch of realism to Pru’s character.

The pages of this book flew by. Ann Pfeffer created an easy-to-read novel that was a joy to keep going, if it weren’t for the other two million things that have to get done in a typical day. You want to root for Pru and hope that she’ll get everything she dreams of.
